Fitial donated $4K to McCain, RNC
Although Gov. Benigno Fitial earlier said that, as far as his administration was concerned, it did not matter if a Republican or Democrat won the U.S. presidential race, records show he was supporting Republican nominee John McCain.
Federal Election Commission records show Fitial donated $2,000 to committees to elect McCain. On Aug. 31, Fitial donated $1,000 to the McCain Victory 2008 campaign. His most recent donation was on Sept. 26. He donated $1,000 to John McCain 2008, Inc.
McCain lost the presidency to Democratic bet Barack Obama on Tuesday.
Before McCain was named the Republic Party’s nominee, Fitial donated $2,750 to the Republican National Committee. The money then went to help McCain and Sarah Palin as they ran for president and vice-president.
Fitial donated the money in three installments:
* $750 on July 31, 2006
* $1,000 on Oct. 13, 200
* $1,000 on June 25, 2007
Also, records indicate Fitial donated $2,000 to George W. Bush, via the Bush-Cheney ‘04 Primary committee, in April 2004.
Since 1997, Fitial has contributed $17,290.00 to political committees and $2,000 to joint fundraising committees.
During a press conference last week, Fitial acknowledged the impact of U.S. politics on Commonwealth affairs, but said that having a Democrat or a Republican in the White House does not matter as far as his administration is concerned.
“I don’t have a problem since I’m Covenant,” said, Fitial, who helped establish the Commonwealth’s Covenant Party in 2001 after many years of membership with the NMI Republican Party.
After Obama won the U.S. presidency, the governor congratulated the president-elect.
“I congratulate president-elect Obama and I look forward to establishing good working relationships with his new administration. I am optimistic that Obama’s victory will lead to positive change for the people of the CNMI, given president-elect Obama’s history and relationships with the people of Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific region,” Fitial said.
