Governor proclaims Nov. 5-11 Veterans Week
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed yesterday a proclamation declaring Nov. 5-11 as Veterans Week in the CNMI during a simple ceremony at his office’s conference room on Capital Hill.
The governor called on everyone to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities in support and in honor of the CNMI’s war veterans.
Fitial said the CNMI had been protected by patriots who cherished liberty and made great sacrifices to advance the cause of freedom and the brave members of the United States Armed Forces have answered the call to serve the nation, ready to give all for their country.
“On Veterans Day, we honor these extraordinary citizens for their service and sacrifice, and we pay tribute to the legacy of freedom and peace that they have given our great Nation,” he said.
Fitial noted that many veterans bear the disabilities and scars of military service and the families of those who never return from their service live always with a profound sense of loss.
“It is our duty to remember what our veterans have done and to uphold our commitments to them and their families,” he said.
A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Court of Honor inside the American Memorial Park on Nov. 11 starting at 11am. The Pacific Winds Concert band will begin with the ceremonial music at 10:30am.
The Chief of Staff for the US Pacific Command based in Hawaii, Maj. Gen. Stephen D. Tom, will be the keynote speaker.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3457 will be hosting a no-host barbeque of hotdogs and hamburgers as well as special promotion and raffle giveaways.
