The Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization will be holding the inaugural junior varsity basketball league for girls next week at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

MISO coordinator Joel Punzalan of Saipan Southern High School said they will initially have three teams in the first ever girls junior varsity caging. The list includes the Lady Manta Rays, the MHS Dolphins, and the Kagman Lady Ayuyus.

“We only have the three high schools for now, but next season, we hope to make it bigger by encouraging private schools to field their junior varsity teams in the girls league,” Punzalan said.

In the past MISO caging, players in the junior high and high school are put in one team and compete in the girls division.

Punzalan said that they decided to have a separate league for high school and junior high school teams to have balanced competition and train new female players.

The MISO coordinator added they set the junior varsity competition apart from the varsity division to avoid conflicts in schedule and give each division equal treatment.

Last season, MISO held two games per playing day with the junior varsity teams playing first, followed by the varsity match. Spectators usually watched the last game.

Meanwhile, action in the boys junior varsity division of the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League resumes tonight with one team guaranteed to break into the win column.

Mt. Carmel School and Kagman High School, which both dropped their first two games of the season, will duel at 4:30pm.

The Ayuyus debuted with a 58-62 loss against the MHS Dolphins and had a 0-2 start in the league after bowing to the Rays in similar scores.

The MCS Knights also lost their first game against the Rays, 63-48, and suffered another beating at the hands of MHS, 44-77, Friday night.

The battle of undefeated teams is set for tomorrow with the Dolphins colliding with the Rays at 4:30pm.

The Dolphins-Rays tiff was originally set for Friday, but was moved early as the MHS Gymnasium will be hosting an event Friday night.

The Rays are this year’s defending champion having beaten the Ayuyus in last season’s finals. The Dolphins won over the Knights in last season’s battle for third place.
