San Vicente Elementary principal Joaquina DLG Salas has been with the Public School System for nearly three decades. Here she explains what it’s like to be a principal:

Question: What is your background?

Answer: I was a teacher aid and teacher. I’ve taught kindergarten through 7th grade. I’ve been with the Public School System for 27 years. I started as vice principal in 2005. I was a first grade teacher at the time. I became principal at the start of the 2007-2008 school year.

Q: What is a typical day like for you?

A: I always look forward to ensuring the children are safe. I’m trying to support teachers and ensuring they have the necessary instructional materials.

Q: What is the best thing about being a principal?

A: I think, for me, it’s very challenging. I can’t look at one focus. I have to make sure the school environment is safe. I want to make sure the instruction delivery is efficient, collaboration with parents is always there. That’s very important.

Q: What is the hardest thing about being a principal?

A: Looking at the budget to make sure to prioritize things. Despite the fact it’s a large school, last year we were given $46,000 with 745 students for operating, so I was being very careful how I spent it. I make sure to spend it on things I really need. We need to do more with less.

Q: What are your goals for the school year?

A: To continue with what we’re been doing. Our data shows what curriculum is really helping. I want to see what areas we need to improve on. We need to plan as a grade level team. I hope to be able to improve on things we’re not meeting.
