GPD gets $1.2M for police officer recruitment and retention
WASHINGTON, D.C.-The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the Guam Police Department $1,278,072 in federal financial assistance. The grant was awarded through the Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program and will provide funding for three years to enable GPD to recruit and retain 12 law enforcement officers.
The COPS Hiring Program provides funding to state and local law enforcement agencies to hire, preserve, and/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs and increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts. This grant will cover the full salary and benefits packages for highly trained public sector positions. The jobs created, preserved, or refilled will advance community policing at the local level, and contribute greatly to the quality of life of the citizens in each community.
“These federal funds will help GPD recruit and retain law enforcement officers to enhance police presence in our community,” said Guam Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo. “The grant reaffirms President Obama’s commitment to creating jobs and improving public safety throughout the country. I look forward to these funds supporting GPD and its mission of keeping our island safe.”
“We welcome any funding that will keep our community and families safer,” said and Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo. (PR)
