Cataluna secures Fil-Taga October Ace
Fred Cataluna crowned himself champion of Fil-Taga Golfers Association’s October Ace of the Month held last Sunday at the Marianas Country Club.
With a gross score of 80, the 10-handicaaper submitted a net score of 2-under par 70 to rule the tournament.
William Retardo also carded a net score of 70 but lost the championship via scorecard tiebreak.
The eight-handicapper finished with a gross score of 78.
Rene Batallones finished third with a net 1-under par 71. The 13-handicapper had a gross score of 84.
Finishing in the Top 5 were Mike Cruz and Greg Gamboa, who had similar net scores of 1-over par 73s.
Cruz, who has a handicap of 21, finished with a gross score of 94 for fourth overall, while Gamboa, who has a handicap of 23, managed a gross of 101 for fifth place.
There were a total of 15 regular Fil-Taga members who joined the October Ace tourney, which drew a total of 21 players including six new members.
The following lists is the regular members’ gross scores, handicap, and net scores: Ted Malaran (94-20-74), Manny Corcuera (86-11,75), Nestor Siruelo (90-15-75), Pete Reyes (86-10-76), Mando Guban (92-16-76), Matutino Adony (97-20-77), Henry Bautista (93-13-80), Nono Bostre (113-30-83), Jhun Calma (100-14-86), and Rey Ferraz (108-19-89).
The club also welcomed six new members with Richard Meimban garnering the best score of 99. Rommel Cruz wound up with a 102. Jason Gatdula and Nazareno Ortiz Jr., meanwhile, carded similar 104s and Rodrigo Nimes managed a 109. John Matsumoto was the lone entry who did not finish the tournament.
Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.
A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
