In celebration of the National Red Ribbon Week on Oct. 23-31, 2008, the Pacific Regional Training Institute kicked off its DARE/GUTS program at Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja, Rota on Oct. 23, 2008.

Substance abuse in the CNMI, Guam, and in other countries has contributed to numerous community problems, from domestic violence to broken homes.

The school’s DARE/GUTS program is headed by its regional supervisor, Sergeant First Class Edward C. Maratita Jr. of the U.S. Armed Forces Military Police Command and the Department of Defense Educational Activity.

According to Maratita, the campaign began the tradition of wearing a red ribbon as a symbol of intolerance toward the use of drugs.

Every year, various activities have been planned to show the program’s commitment to a drug-free school and community. On Oct. 31, 2008, Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja DARE/GUTS Student Body Council will hold a Red Ribbon Week Halloween Costume contest and Group Dance contest. (PR)
