Three local businesses gave in a big way this week to the Red Cross, donating thousands to fund the charity’s mission here on Saipan.

The largest donation came from First Hawaiian Bank, which gave $3,000 to support the Red Cross’s annual fundraising dinner. Saipan Ice gave $1,500 to aid the organization’s efforts to improve the health and public welfare of the CNMI’s people and the Moylan’s insurance firm gave $1,000 for the same.

“All these businesses are annual supporters of the Red Cross,” said local Red Cross executive director John Hirsh. “Without their support, the NMI Chapter would not be able to operate and provide important training and support to families in need.”

An average of 91 cents out of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs, according to the organization’s Web site.

In September, the Red Cross launched the Campaign for Disaster Relief to aid survivors of natural disasters, with the goal of raising $100 million dollars. Six weeks later, the campaign had raised $50 million.
