The Loyola Yearend Tennis Tournament will be held this weekend at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan courts with four division titles at stake.

Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan instructor Peter Loyola said interested participants can join the Open Junior and Levels 1, 2, and 3 divisions.

“Players will be categorized according to their skill level not on their age group,” said Loyola, who added that the tournament will mix male and female players.

Loyola said the tournament on Oct. 25 and 26 will serve as a tune-up for the NMITA Fall Classic which will be held next month.

The Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan instructor added that holding this kind of tournament is one way of helping the island develop junior tennis players.

The Open Junior and Levels 2 and 3 divisions will be using the Pro Set scoring system, which allows a player to win a match once he scored eight points in a one-set game only. Matches in Level 1 division will have the regular scoring, but will also be played in one set.

The Top 4 winners in each division will be awarded with trophies.

The two-day tournament, which is supported by the Tan and Isuka families, will have a double-elimination format.

Interested participants have until today to submit entry forms.

The weekend netfest will be Loyola’s third this year.

Five months ago, Loyola hosted a tournament for both adult and junior players.

The adult competition featured Class A and B divisions, while the junior event was divided into two age groups.

Lydia Tan ruled the Class A division beating Melanie Daly in the finals, 8-5. It was Tan’s third Class A title after winning two last year.

Sakiko Eda topped Class B, thumping Vicki Izuka and Mayling Colombo.

In the boys’ 13-and-under age group, Chris Park won over Chris Cepeda, Jeron Ano, and Grant Rhee.

The girls’ and boys’ 9-and-under divisions had Sakura Imaya and Carl Dela Cruz as top winners. Imaya defeated Gio Song in the finals, 6-0, while Dela Cruz prevailed over Kevin Rhee, 6-2.
