Jones, Chambers win their age groups
Angello Jones and Cole Chambers won their age group divisions in last Saturday’s 8th Annual Saipan International School 5K Fun Run held in Marpi.
Jones topped the under-13 division of the five-kilometer race after crossing the finish line at Banzai Cliff in 24:03. He was followed by Kenyon Shultz and Nuri Gutzwiller with times of 25:18 and 25:32, respectively.
In the women’s under-13 competition, Gabrielle Race was the first to reach Banzai Cliff with a time of 37:30. Amy Arenovski (42:40) and Amber Patttillo (45:28) came in second and third.
Chambers, meanwhile, was first in the 1-kilometer kids race after the 7-year-old checked in at 18:21. Edward Joon Cho and Zoe Provido came in second and third in the co-ed competition with times of 20:56 and 20:58, respectively.
Last Saturday’s early morning fun run drew a total of 138 individuals, according to coordinator Betty Johnson. The event started from Banzai Cliff and had participants run toward Cowtown Raceway Park and back to the finish line at Banzai Cliff.
The open division saw Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel win the men’s division with a time of 19:16. While the former record-holder’s time was still off Eli Torgeson’s new standard of 16:40, the man who fondly calls himself Roadrunner Bunny vowed to obliterate the anesthesiologist’s time next year.
Finishing second and third in the men’s open were Northern Marianas Athletics up-and-coming runners Champ Untalan (19:57) and Matthew Mancao (20:34).
Mieko Carey, for her part, shattered Mamiko Berger’s record of 21:51 for the women after crossing the finish line in 21:23.
Checking in after Carey in the women’s division were Rebecca Read (21:55) and Monica Yamaguchi (24:09).
Johnson, meanwhile, thanked the following sponsors for their in-kind donations for the SIS Fun Run: AIC Marianas, Big Dipper, Deloitte, Delta Management, DFS Galleria, Hawaiian Rock Products, Himawari, Marianas Medical Center, Micronesian Marine, Pacific Islands Club (PIC), PTI, Saipan Ice, Shell, The Financial Group, The Water Company, Tropical Blend Spa, and Claybodies Art Studio.
