The Friends of the Monument would like to thank the 5,502 individual residents who have signed the support the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument petition and the 60 petition gatherers who volunteered their time to achieve this tremendous showing of public support.

We started collecting signatures on June 21 and for four months you stood in front of stores, brought the petition to family events and beach barbecues, walked the Thursday Street Market, sat at a tent at the Sabalu Market and went door to door in your villages to collect signatures.

Each of those 5,502 signatures represents a face-to-face conversation that took place in our community. You shared our vision for the monument and you told people why you were supporting it. You addressed people’s concerns. You answered questions. While every once in a while a person refused to sign, overall you helped build overwhelming support for our monument.
