Labor representative Carmelina Velasquez is pleased that a number of Filipino workers on Saipan have already registered for the three skills upgrading and livelihood courses they will offer for the last quarter of 2011.
Velasquez disclosed that since they released the new schedule of courses a little over a week ago, 26 have already signed up for Basic Computer Operations I – Batch 54, which runs from Oct. 16 to Nov. 20, while 29 have enrolled in the Domestic Refrigeration and Aircon Mechanic – Batch 2, from Nov. 5 to 19.
The Fruit and Vegetable Carving class – Batch 3, which begins today and concludes on Oct. 22, has a total of 48 enrollees.
In the third quarter training, a total of 77 graduated from Culinary Arts; 55 from Basic Computer Operations I – Batch 53; 17 from Basic Mandarin Language – Batch 2; and 32 from Building & Fixing Computers – Batch 9.
The Domestic Refrigeration and Aircon Mechanic – Batch I, which is still ongoing, has 55 students.
“It really shows that Filipinos here are interested to learn new things that will give them options,” Velasquez told Saipan Tribune.
According to Velasquez, the significant number of enrollees is proof that these Filipino workers “haven’t lost hope.”
“In a way, this is something to help prepare themselves. There is already acceptance. At least now they know their options. Rest assured that we will continue to provide these livelihood courses for them,” she added.
Velasquez said that for this quarter, they opted to offer the basic courses for computer as well as refrigeration and aircon mechanic “to have new students get involved and benefit in these courses.”
“By next year, we will continue with the advance training in our computer and language courses,” she said.
