Sonny Flores secures October Ace
Sonny Flores won the Refaluwasch Golf Association October Ace after his qualifying score held up during the monthly tournament last Saturday at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort.
Flores shot a net 65 in the qualifier held a week prior to the October Ace. The 15-handicapper had a good start at the Agingan Point course firing a 3-over par 39 on the front nine.
He, however, failed to sustain his momentum on the back nine, limping back to the clubhouse with a five-over par 41 for a gross 80.
While he wasn’t the best for October, former Division of Community and Cultural Affairs director Tony Rogolifoi came away with the day’s lowest score after the NMASA Hall of Famer carded a net 66 last Saturday.
Rogolifoi actually shot a gross score of 82 after the 16-handicapper fired a 43 in the front nine before improving with a 39 in the back nine.
RGA president Adam Hardwicke finished second after putting up a net score of 68, built around a gross of 72 (35-37).
Hardwicke actually finished tied with Tars Olopai (41-38, 79 gross, 11 handicap) for the runner-up honor, but the former edged the latter in a scorecard tiebreak, 33-33.5 based on the front nine net score.
A total of 10 players took part in the October Ace. The rest of the players, with their net scores in parenthesis, are as follows: Dwayn Stephens (69); John Mettao (72); Manny Mangarero (72); Jess Wabol (72); Ulysis Kapileo (78); Jordan Kossam (78); and Tom Tebuteb (85).
In the closest to the pin competition, Kossam was without peer in hole No. 7, while Olopai took the prize in hole No. 14.
In related news, Wabol, who is the club’s tournament coordinator, reminded Ace of the Month winners that they need to have played in a minimum of four tournaments (including qualifiers) in order to qualify for the yearend RGA Club Championship set on Dec. 6 at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort. The Club Championship assembles all 12 monthly champions, provided they qualify.
