The NMI Council for the Humanities re-elected Dr. Debra T. Cabrera to a second term as a member of its board of directors during a meeting held earlier this week.

Cabrera, who holds a Ph.D. in sociology, is the dean of Academic Programs and Services at Northern Marianas College. She was elected to her first term in 2005 and has served as the board chair since April 2008.

Other new Council board members include Janet N. King, Charles P. Reyes Jr., and Lillian A. Tenorio, who were appointed by Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, and Fredrick P. Deleon Guerrero, who was elected by the board. Each will serve a three-year term. King represents the island of Tinian.

The Humanities Council, a private, non-profit corporation established in 1991, is governed by a 13-member board, three of which are gubernatorial appointees.

Its mission is to foster awareness, understanding and appreciation of the humanities through support of educational programs that relate the humanities to the indigenous cultures and to the intellectual needs and interests of the people of the Commonwealth. [B][I](PR)
