WPS Terns spike to 4th win against SIS Green Geckos
Whispering Palms School is right on target for its third consecutive championship appearance.
The Terns spiked to their fourth win in five games this season over the visiting Saipan International School Green Geckos yesterday in the middle school division of the 2008 Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association Volleyball League.
After a hard-earned 25-22 win in the first set, the Terns easily prevailed in the second set, 25-13, as they took advantage of a string of errors by the Green Geckos.
Ilia Corella stepped up when the team needed her most.
She was credited for five straight points on her booming serves that gave the Terns a 13-2 lead in the second set.
From then on the Green Geckos never recovered as they moved to within seven points, 11-15, but the Terns easily regrouped and raced to a 24-11 advantage on the way to the win.
The 15-year-old Corella sealed the victory with a double-handed faceback return near the net.
With their latest victory, the Terns are a perfect 3-0 so far at home following their wins over defending champion Seventh Day Adventist on opening day last Sept. 9 and followed that up against the SIS-Blue Geckos on Sept. 18.
The Terns’ other home game last Tuesday, Sept. 23, against Calvary Christian School was reset to a later day due to heavy downpour that also affected other matches in different venues.
The Terns were 1-1 on the road. They won over Mt. Carmel School on Sept. 11 but lost to Grace Christian School on Sept. 16.
Coach Richard Brostrom was happy with the way things are happening for the Terns, who were champions in 2005 but lost the title to SDA last season.
The Terns are hoping to continue their winning form when they meet Saipan Community School next on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Other games that were played yesterday were SDA vs. MBA in high school division, SIS-B vs. GCA in both divisions, MCS vs. CCA (both), and SDA vs. SCS in middle school.
Results of these games were still unavailable as of press time.
The GCA Eagles were undefeated in four starts prior to its game against the SIS Blue Geckos as they pace the lead in the middle school division.
The Eagles will meet SDA on Sept. 30 both in the high school and middle school divisions.
Other games Tuesday will have SIS-G vs. CCA (both) and MCS vs. SIS-B in middle school division.
