2 NMI volunteers aid in Texas relief efforts
The NMI Chapter of the American Red Cross sent two of its Disaster Services Volunteers to Texas to assist with the relief efforts caused by Hurricane Ike.
Joe Race, a local writer, and Anna Ludwick, a retired teacher, both left for Texas Saturday, Sept. 20, for a three-week assignment.
Since arriving, Race has been working with shelters on feeding people that had to evacuate from their homes. He said they are now on their way to Galveston, Texas, where Hurricane Ike hit the hardest.
Aside from having to live in tents for the next couple of weeks, Race and Ludwick will join the many other volunteers who will be without electricity and running water.
Despite the living conditions, Race and Ludwick remain very positive. Race said that working with other motivated volunteers keeps him going everyday.
The American Red Cross has served over two million meals and snacks to those affected by Hurricane Ike.
Throughout the month of September, the NMI Chapter of the Red Cross will be giving public presentations on disaster preparedness. The Red Cross encourages the public to make a plan, build a kit and be informed.
Red Cross disaster volunteers Christie Sablan-Keptot encourages families to make the disaster preparedness a family event and to get children involved in the process. (ARC)
