Saipan Southern adds 5th period

Some Saipan Southern High School students are spending a little more time in the classroom this year.
“In order to accommodate students who need credits under the current system, we have no choice but to institute a fifth period,” said SSHS vice principal Craig Garrison.
The added period means some students will be in class from 8am to 5:15pm.
Majority of the students with a fifth period class are students who were retained in that subject area, Garrison said. Currently, there are two English sections and two math sections and the school is considering adding a science section. Public schools students must earn 28 credits to graduate.
Students retained are not required to attend the fifth period; they can opt to take summer school, although summer school is dependent on funding and staff, Garrison said. The fifth period allows students and families to choose which option is better.
“[Families] may have other plans for the summer or students may work,” he added.
School administrators will have to wait until the end of the quarter to see the results of the extra period. Fatigue and the fact that support staff leaves at 4:30pm are concerns for the administrators, Garrison said.
