The NMI Council for the Humanities is inviting seventh and eighth grade classes from around the Commonwealth to register for the 2008 Junior High Mock Trial Program.

According to the Council’s acting executive director, Scott Russell, the mock trial program is held annually to help junior high school students develop useful knowledge about the law in an enjoyable, non-competitive format.

The program also readies participants for the competitive mock trial program at the high school level.

Each participating mock trial team will be headed by a teacher coach and will receive periodic legal advice and guidance from a lawyer coach.

Russell said that the Council will sponsor a four-hour workshop in October to introduce teacher coaches to the program. Case materials will be ready for distribution to participating teams in November.

This year’s program will culminate in a series of mock trials between participating teams to be held at the U.S. District Court chamber in March 2009 during which the judge will recognize exceptional performances by student lawyers and witnesses.

Russell said that registration forms may be obtained at the Council’s office in Dandan or downloaded from the Council’s website at www.nmihumanities.org. (PR)
