A plan to create a public park in Kagman has been put in the back burner after lawmakers learned the proposed site has been designated for a watershed project.

The House Committee on Natural Resources has recommended that the proposal be filed. Rep. Heinz Hofschneider, who penned the legislation establishing the public park, has agreed with the recommendation.

Hofschneider’s proposal was to designate a wetland and forested area bordering Kagman subdivisions I and II for a public park to be known as the Kagman Arboretum and Community Park.

But upon review, the Natural Resources Committee found that the land parcel has been designated for the Kagman watershed project since the early 1990s. The watershed plan includes the installation of a system of waterways for flood protection and for water collection and conveyance, a water storage reservoir, and an irrigation water distribution system. Accelerated land treatment to plan on-farm irrigation systems is also provided for in the watershed plan.

Approximately $4 million has already been spent on the watershed project.
