Geckos win back-to-back in junior varsity volleyball
Host Saipan International Green Team defeated the visiting Saipan Community in straight sets, 25-10, 25-13, yesterday in the junior varsity division of the 2008 Coalition of Private Schools volleyball league.
After failing in their first two assignments this season, the Geckos nailed back-to-back wins as they dealt SCS its fourth loss in as many games.
The win, come-backing coach Kim Peterson said, brought up her players’ spirits. She said things are just getting better for the team.
The twin victories also raised the level of optimism for the team’s chances this season.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Green Geckos prevailed over sister team Blue Geckos that redeemed themselves from defeats against Mt. Carmel last Sept. 9 and Grace Christian Academy last Sept. 11.
The JV Green Geckos will try to keep their momentum going when they face defending champion SDA Knights on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Asked what is still lacking from the team, Peterson said they have to work on their technique as well as to improve their communication inside the playing court.
Losing SCS co-mentor Tamiko Winkfield said her players should work together to be able to catch up. SCS’ other coach is Jackie VanDam.
Despite the loss, Winkfield said her players are improving. She said most of her players are first-timers.
SIS-Green’s High School Team was still playing against Marianas Baptist Academy as of press time.
Five other games, three in the middle school division and two in high school, were being played in other venues but have no available results.
