Pearl Palacios, the starting point guard for the gold medal-winning CNMI National Women’s Basketball Team in the 2006 Micronesian Games, is currently in South Korea teaching English as Second Language .

In an email to the Saipan Tribune, the daughter of Joaquin “Jack” U. Palacios, said she signed a one-year contract in the East Asian country to gain some experience and use what she learned in college. Palacios graduated from the University of Utah in June 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Speech Science.

Palacios, who is also the granddaughter of Esperanza Atalig Ulloa Palacios and the late Augustin Tudela Palacios, said she will forever be thankful and grateful to the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance office, or SHEFA, and her father for giving her the full support to successfully complete her education.

In fact, Palacios said, she is following in her father’s footsteps. The elder Palacios, who also represented the CNMI in off-island basketball events, holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Guam.

After spending most of her adult life away from home, Palacios said she has not lost sight of her obligation to the CNMI and wants to contribute time to public service when she does come back.

“Until such time when the CUC power becomes stable, I will return. I’m saddened to see that the global economy is in a sad state. I also hope to see the people of the CNMI unite in one heart and accept each others’ difference and pull back together because everyone is suffering and it is the only way to move forward,” se said.

Palacios also wants to wish good luck to her uncle Chong Man Won in the upcoming election for U.S Delegate. (Saipan Tribune)
