Guam council launches treasure hunt, poster contest

[B]GUAM[/B]—The Tourism Education Council has launched the “Nihi Ta Sodda Y Proa” Let’s Go Find the Proa! Treasure Hunt Contest, and Proa Poster Contest.

“Since this is the year of the Proa, and in celebration of the completed Proa canoe recently built by the Tourism Education Council, we have decided to create a treasure hunt and poster contest for the youth of our island,” said TEC chair Jackie Marati.

Each participant must search for and create a list of proa signs, models, artwork, imprints, logos—even the actual proa—anywhere on Guam. The entry with the longest list of proas collected will be the winner.

[B]The winners will win:[/B]

-First place: $250 cash from Bank of Guam and $25 Agana Shopping Center gift certificate for the teacher.

-Second place: $75 Agana Shopping Center Gift Certificate

-Third place: $25 Agana Shopping Center Gift Certificate

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Agana Shopping Center on Nov. 1, 2008.

Students 6th – 12th grades (middle and high schools) from public, private, DODEA, and home schools may participate in the contest.

[B]Requirements[/B]

-The list must include the item type, location, date, and parent or teacher initial for verification.

-Each proa must be found only on Guam.

-Accompanying photo for each proa is highly recommended but not required (photos may be reproduced and used for other promotional purposes). . 

[B]Poster Contest[/B]

Each participating school will hold a contest. The judging panels from each school will select three entries to be submitted for public vote at the Agana Shopping Center. The top five posters will then be judged by a panel for final selection.

[B]The winners will win:[/B]

The winning design will be unveiled at an awards ceremony at the Agana Shopping Center on Nov. 1, 2008.

The winning artwork will be reproduced into an islandwide distributed poster and be used for other promotional purposes.

Children 1st-8th grades (elementary and middle schools) from public, private, DODEA, and home schools.

At least one of the following topics must be depicted in the artwork: Endurance, Strength, Beauty, Culture, and/or Adaptability.

[B]Artwork Requirements[/B]

-Artwork must be original.

-Student name must not be on the front of the artwork.

-Artwork should have a title on the front.

-The topic, title, and description must be on the Submission Form.

-Entries should be on white letter size (8 ½” x 11″) paper.

-Materials may include crayon, markers, paint (watercolor, tempera, acrylic).

-Lettering and message should be large enough to reproduce well. All pencil markings should be erased.

-Copyrighted characters (such as Mickey Mouse), product logos, and trademarked or brand names cannot be used.

Judging Criteria will include content accuracy, visual communication of topic, reproducibility, and originality.

[B]Entry Submission[/B]

Only one entry may be submitted per child.

The Submission Form and entry must be completed received no later than 5pm, Oct. 17, 2008 (Friday), Administration Office at the Agana Shopping Center.

The entry and Submission Form must be enclosed in an envelope and labeled:
