Tinian amphitheatre complete in 2 months
Completion of a new amphitheatre at Tinian’s Natibu Park that will serve as an events center for the island’s residents is just over two month away, with construction crews now working on its rooftop.
In an interview Thursday, William Cing, adviser to Tinian Mayor Jose San Nicolas, said the new amphitheatre, funded through a $553,000 federal grant, will give the island’s residents a new venue for school plays, weddings, concerts and public meetings.
“It will be a multipurpose amphitheatre where people can gather,” Cing said, adding it will seat an estimated 200 people.
Construction on the project began earlier in the summer and, according to staff at the Northern Marianas Housing Corp., which is overseeing the grant, the theatre is slated for completion Nov. 23.
Cing said workers are now engaged in the metalwork needed to finish the roof. NMHC staff added that work on a parking lot and seating for the theatre will also soon begin.
Although Tinian already has a pavilion that is somewhat akin to a theatre, Cing said the new amphitheatre will feature lighting and a sound system, along with dressing rooms and spots for local vendors that will make it a more distinctive venue. The amphitheatre will also have ramps and other features designed to cater to people with limited mobility.
Planning for the amphitheatre began under the previous mayoral administration, Cing added.
