Northern Marianas College president Sharon Hart assured employees that no work-hour reduction will take place during the fiscal year, despite a projected shortfall in the college’s personnel cost.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate to place them into austerity because we need to make the best decision for the organization. I don’t want to do that to my employees.because that’s not my way of managing,” Hart said in a visit to her office.
She told Saipan Tribune that unless the Board of Regents gainsays her decision, she will keep the 80-hour biweekly schedule for all staff.
The college has 175 employees, mostly administrative personnel and staff.
The Executive Branch has enforced an across-the-board austerity Fridays until the end of the fiscal year due to declining collections and resources. It projects revenue to reach only $102 million this fiscal year.
During Monday’s special board meeting, it was learned that NMC is projected to incur a shortfall of $432,783 in fiscal year 2012.
The Legislature had approved a $5.1 million budget for the college, of which $3.9 million will be used for personnel cost while $1.2 million will go to all others and operations. However, because the college’s average payroll is $216,224, this brings the estimated total payroll projection for 26 pay periods to $5.6 million. (Moneth Deposa)
