Kapena
Shimbros Music did it again! The terrific group “Kapena” from our sister island of Hawaii was at the Fiesta Resort last Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, and they blasted the power outage away with a command performance on stage right here on Saipan.
I would like to extend my appreciation to Mr. Paul Shimizu of Shimbros Music for his kindness to invite me, my guest, and the entire family to hear Kapena perform on stage again. You see, about 15 years ago, on Kapena’s first Pacific island tour (Hawaiian Sun Splash) I was their opening act, which took us all through Micronesia. It was a fond memory as Paul and I sat together admiring the new Kapena style that is tailored for the new ages. Paul was so courteous to have Kelly boy acknowledge my presence by dedicating the song Sowetto for me and my guests.
It was a first class show with a well-mannered crowd, all sporting good times together. Even my niece, Rep. Tina Sablan, was dancing the night away! The climax of the concert was when Kelly Boy’s 16-year-old daughter held her breath on a single note that went all the way to the moon, to Hawaii and back to Saipan before exhaling. It was murderous! I almost came out of my wheelchair. The sweetness of her voice, I know, charmed all hearts in front of her. And man, was Parker the best? Well, it was the first time I actually heard him perform and he blew me away! Parker can create and recreate keyboard sounds like nobody’s business and he’s got the most pleasant showmanship voice my ears have ever trained on. You’re the best, Ole!
The entire CNMI applauds Shimbros Music for always bringing in the best acts to Saipan. As Paul and I sat next to each other enjoying the Kapena perform, he whispered to me, “He and I can unite the islands together through music.” I am quite sure what he meant, and I answered him, “Yes, indeed!” Then we shook hands and he said it’s a promise. What a guy that Paul is! Thank you so much, bro!
