Outages and sleepy children

I am speaking on behalf of most parents whose children attend the CNMI Public School System. The governor was right when he requested for classes to be delayed for another two weeks due to the power crisis. When the Board of Education insisted that classes will begin on Sept. 8, 2008, I believe the members only thought of the school hours during the daytime when they could accommodate our children.

What they forgot were the evening power outages, which are now 2-4 hours and most times two to three times a night. How could the board members expect students to go to school the next day knowing that these children haven’t had enough sleep? They’ll be restless and sleepy and the fault will fall on the students.

Our advice as parents is that we wait until full power is restored and then open the classes. The summer next year might be shorter but at least it’s better than having them go to school early this year, during which, for every power outage, they will be pulled out from their classrooms because it’s either dark or hot. And at night they don’t get enough sleep because of these surprise power outages.
