With a qualifying net score of 66, Tars Olopai has one hand around the September Ace of the Month Tournament of the Refaluwasch Golf Association.

Olopai topped the qualifying tournament held last Sunday at the Kingfisher Golf Links after his 78 gross (40-38) was sliced by his 12 handicap.

Sonny Flores was two shots off Olopai’s pace with a net score of 68 built around a gross of 84 (39-45) to place second in the qualifier. The U.S. Post Office staff sports a 16 handicap.

Two golfers finished three strokes behind Olopai but Tony Rogolifoi grabbed the No. 3 spot after nipping Asterio Tawanpiy in a scorecard tiebreak.

Both players carded identical 69s but Rogolifoi came away with a 31.5 net in the front nine, compared to Tawanpiy’s 34.

A total of 14 RGA members took part in the qualifier. The rest, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Dwayn Stephens (70); Jordan Kossam (70); Manny Mangarero (70); Jess Wabol (73); Ben Duenas (73); Adam Hardwicke (73); Ulysis Kapileo (74); Tom Tebuteb (75); Louie Tilipao (81); and Joe Wabol (86).

In the closest to the pin competition, Duenas was without peer in hole No. 6, while Tawanpiy owned No. 15.

RGA will hold its September Ace of the Month Tournament two Sundays from now on Sept. 13 at the same Talafofo venue.

Tournament director Jess Wabol also reminded Ace of the Month winners that they need to have played in a minimum of six tournaments (including qualifiers) in order to qualify for the yearend RGA Club Championship.

He said only four monthly championships remain before RGA’s yearend Club Championship set on Dec. 6 at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort in Koblerville. The Club Championship assembles all 12 monthly champions, provided they qualify.
