Students at Williams S. Reyes Elementary School will be required to wear uniforms this school year.

Uniforms will allow all students to be on a level playing field, school principal Lynette Villagomez said.

“It balances social and economic status,” she said.

Uniforms will also help distinguish current students from former students who might be visiting the campus, and the blue color will instill school pride, she said.

This will make WSR school the only public school on island requiring student uniforms.

Boys will have a choice of cargo shorts or pants, while girls can choose between a skort or capri pants. Both boys and girls will wear a polo shirt. A set of five costs $115, but parents can buy pieces separately, she said.

Parents were sent a survey last year asking for their input on the idea, Villagomez said. A committee looked at several proposals before deciding on the uniforms.

“They did research. They looked not only at quality but price as well,” she said.

The committee is looking at different options to help those who are unable to afford the clothes. One possibility is using money from penny drives to cover the uniform costs, Villagomez said.
