‘New generators will boost CUC revenue’
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. should see a 20- to 25-percent increase in revenue once the new Aggreko generators are up and running, CUC executive director Antonio Muna said yesterday.
The Aggreko generators will allow for a more reliable power source for the public. The island is currently undergoing three- to four-hour rotating outages daily, with some villages experiencing outages of seven or eight hours.
The generators are expected to provide an additional15 to 18 megawatts of power. CUC is counting on Power Plant 4 to provide 14 megawatts, and Power Plant 1 10 megawatts, for a total of 39 to 42 megawatts.
The price of power for the month of September will decrease because fuel prices have gone down, but more people will be using more power, allowing for greater revenue for CUC, Muna said.
The first Aggreko shipment arrived last Saturday with spare parts and infrastructure pieces. The next shipment is expected to arrive Aug. 31, with two more shipments arriving Sept. 6 and Sept. 12. CUC will then turn on the generators and they should be fully operational by Sept. 16 or 17, he said
CUC paid Aggreko $1.5 million as a down payment to ship the generators. CUC must pay another $504,000 30 days after the last shipment arrives, which CUC will pay with incoming revenue, Muna said.
