Registration for the 2008 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamonds Softball qualifying leg of the 2008 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamonds Softball Tournament is ongoing and interested teams have two more weeks to prepare and join the event set for Sept. 13 and 14.

“We are inviting teams to participate in the tournament and try to earn the right to represent Saipan in the ‘Tournament of Champions’ in Palau,” coordinator Joey Dela Cruz said.

Next month’s tournament will be the third qualifier for the Saipan leg. Winners of the three qualifiers and the wild card phase will slug it out in the Saipan championships in October. The champion team of the Saipan leg will then compete in the Tournament of Champions against Guam and Palau in November.

So far, Shell Marianas and Natibu had already qualified for the Saipan championship.

Shell Marianas, which is composed of players from No Ka Oi topped he first qualifier. No Ka Oi ruled the 2008 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamonds Softball Tournament in the last three years.

The first qualifying tournament winner also won the second qualifier early this month, but tournament rules do not allow repeat winners to qualify twice, thus runner-up Natibu took the second qualifying berth.

Third and fourth placers in the first two qualifiers advanced to the wild card phase. They were SaiPal Total Chaos, Sufa and On the Rox.

The wild card round is scheduled for Oct. 4 and 5 and will not require teams to pay an entrance fee. Registration fee for regular qualifying tournament is $150.

The wild card phase will have a single-elimination format with the winner joining Shell Marianas, Natibu, and the top placer of the third qualifier in the Saipan leg championship set for Oct. 11 and 12.

All games will be played at the Capital Hill Ballfield with qualifying teams playing in a double-elimination championship round.
