Two in a row for Southern Sonics
The Southern Sonics rolled to their second straight win in the 2008 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League after clobbering the G-Stars, 81-4, Monday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The Sonics won their debut and early rematch with the CNMI Junior Nationals last week, 71-64, and the victory over the G-Stars gave them the solo lead in the eight-team cage competition.
The Jesse Tudela-mentored struggled against the Junior Nationals in their first game, but went into cruise control against the G-Stars.
The Sonics’ much deeper bench proved to be too much for the young crew of the G-Stars, which absorbed their second consecutive loss after bowing to the San Antonio Sixers in their debut last week.
Manuel Ajoste, who nailed 19 points against the Junior Nationals, was at the forefront of the Sonics’ offense anew, hitting 17 markers.
The Sonics drew contributions from 11 other players and had only one member of the team failing to score. Noel Soria chipped in 11, Leo Garase made nine, Bryan Ajoste added eight, and six players netter four markers apiece.
Soria drilled nine of his total points in the first half, which saw the Sonics pulling away early with a 42-28 halftime lead. Manuel Ajoste scored the Sonics’ first and earned most of his points in the first half from the free throw line to give the team a 14-point advantage at the break.
Byran Ajoste, who was held to one field goal in the first half, found his mark in the second, while Galarse nailed all his points in the last 20 minutes of the match to lift the Sonics to a 32-point win.
Nate Mateo paced the G-Stars with 12 points, but had only two field goals in the second half, on which the Jose Tumaquip-coached squad failed to make headway losing their bid for an upset win. Joseph Jung contributed 10, but scored only one free throw in the second half.
