Simon, Diane top monthly roll-offs
Simon Manacop and Diane Camacho won their third and second Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling tournaments of the year, respectively, at the conclusion of the August roll-off last Monday at the Capital Bowling Center.
Manacop added the August plum to those he already won in March and June after firing a pinfall total of 851 (212.75 average) last Sunday.
The Department of Public Safety officer opened up with three straight 200-plus games (244, 241, and 201) in Day 1 of the competition before tapering off a bit with a lowly 165 in the fourth game
Fellow Sunday rollers Kitz Barja and Raymond Angeles came in second and third. Barja wound up with a 757 total and 189.25 average after a rollercoaster performance of 205, 165, 206, and 181 in the four-game series.
Angeles, for his part, mirrored the Micronesian Brokers, Inc. general manager’s up-and-down campaign after the youth bowler came away with scores of 150, 209, 172, and 181.
Manacop, Barja, and Angeles went home $100, $40, and $25 richer for their performances in the King of the Lanes.
Completing the Top 5 in the men’s division were perfect bowler Dannie Robles and steady veteran Orlie Ebuen. Robles finished with a 740 pinfall total and 185 average, while Ebuen was good for 680 and 170.
In the Queen of the Lanes, January winner Camacho took the pole position away from Day 1 leader and July winner Elena Soll to top the August roll-off.
Camacho, long regarded the top women’s bowler on the island, brought out her A game Monday to finish with a 704 pinfall total, good for a 176 average. She made up for a lackluster 154 start, by connecting on 196, 172, and 182 pins in her final three rolls.
Diane Chong, meanwhile, also leapfrogged past Soll in the August race after totaling 671 and averaging 167.75. She registered a four-game series of 192, 147, 180, and 152.
Soll settled for second runner-up honors after blasting 663 pinfalls—good for a 165.55 average—built around rolls of 177, 166, 172, and 148.
For finishing in the Top 3 of the women’s division, Camacho, Chong, and Soll pocketed $50, $25, and $215, respectively.
The August King and Queen of the Lanes attracted a total of 36 entries. The monthly competition is organized by Saipan Bowling Association and is sponsored by MARPAC.
Last Sunday, Raphael Zapanta won his sixth Bing Prince/Princess of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament of 2008 after besting a field of six other youth bowlers with a 737 pinfall total and 184.25 average. The 13-year-old Chacha Junior High School student also won in the February, March, May, June, and July competitions of the monthly youth roll-off.
