Refaluwasch Golf Association member Asterio Tawanpiy won the Sufa Golf Tournament held at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort in Koblerville Saturday.

Tawanpiy recorded a net 73 to beat 26 other participants, including fellow RGA golfer Jess Wabol, who scored a net 73.2.

Tawanpiy, who had a 12 handicap in the double-peoria tournament, shot a 40 on the front and slowed down a bit on the back with a 45 for a gross 85.

A double-peoria tournament is sort of a one-day handicap system for golf events with tournament committee selecting secret holes. Hidden holes in Saturday’s tournament were Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 18.

Wabol had a -12 handicap after an even par 36 performance on both nines to settle for second place. The Micronesian Games veteran shot the lowest gross with 72 to win two water park passes at Pacific Islands Club and $200 cash for placing second to Tawanpiy.

Tawanpiy went home with $300, while third placer Tars Olopai pocketed 100.

Olopai tied Wabol’s net score, but dropped to third, as the former drilled 38 on the front nine, two strokes behind the latter’s 36. Olopai, who had a 4.8 handicap, fired a 40 on the back for a gross 78.

Actually, two other golfers also had a net 73.2, but Ralph Yumul and Lorraine A. Babauta were relegated to fourth and fifth places, respectively, after scoring a 40 and 48 on the front nine.

Rudy Sablan finished sixth with his net 73.4, followed by Lucio Aldan (73.4), Joe Sablan (74.8), Ed Manibusan (75.2), and Frank Castro (75.2).

Besides the cash prizes for the Top 3 placers, Sufa Softball Association also awarded prizes courtesy of Shell Marianas, Laolao Bay, Palms Resort Saipan, and Pacific Island Club for the sixth to 10th finishers.

Saturday’s event was a fundraising tournament with its proceeds to be used for SSA’s trip to Las Vegas. Sufa is sending a team to Nevada to join the 4th Annual CNMI Labor Day Softball Tournament next month.
