The National Endowment for the Humanities announced yesterday $27.6 million dollars in grant awards and offers to 222 successful applicants, including $67,430 for the CNMI.

The Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities received $49,930 in outright funding and matching funds worth $17,500 for the project, “We the People: Miscellaneous Projects” directed by Debra Cabrera.

The project focuses on cultural, social, economic and political issues, including a major immigrant group and contemporary life as seen through the eyes of young adults. The project aims to preserve and disseminate primary historical resources important to the study of the history of the Northern Mariana Islands.

“The mission of the Endowment is to encourage lifelong learning in the humanities,” said NEH chair Bruce Cole. “Each project receiving support today will further that mission by helping our nation’s citizens gain insight to the ideas and events that inspire us all.”

The funding will help institutions secure long-term support for humanities programs by enriching humanities education; supporting educators’ professional development; and helping scholars use digital tools to enhance scholarship and make humanities resources more accessible.

The grants will also provide local, national and historical sites in American history the chance to purchase high-quality media, library, and museum programming for public audiences.

The Guam Humanities Council received $55,760 in outright funding and $17,500 requiring local matching funds, for a total of $73,260.

The Guam project, “8,000, How Will It Change Our Lives?: Community Conversations in the U.S. Military Buildup in Guam,” seeks to inform the Guam community about the U.S. military buildup. The Council is working in conjunction with the Mayor’s Council and other community based organizations and local military based groups.
