Going back to school? Go green

As you prepare your child for the new school year, have the earth in mind and try going green. It’s not as difficult as it sounds, in fact, these are ideas you may have already thought about and needed this little reminder.

Kids like getting something new each year, but new does not always be brand new, but different. Your kids can reuse an existing backpack instead of buying a brand new one. Check out the garage sales around island, you’re bound to find something for next-to-nothing.

Keep your child hydrated and invest in a reusable water bottle, instead of continuously buying plastic bottles or those darned non-recyclable tetra-paks.

There are also a variety of reusable containers available to store snacks and lunch instead of brown bagging it or using the conventional plastic sandwich bags.

Recycled notebook or binder paper is available at local school supply outlets.

Don’t forget to involve your child as you organize for the new school year; this is a perfect opportunity to talk with him or her about the importance of protecting our resources. This also sets the stage for environmental stewardship as they grow up.

The future of solar-powered buses and organic school lunches will be coming around, in the meantime, though, we can take small steps to go green and protect our earth. (CoCo)
