Veteran golfer Nick Sablan won Refaluwasch Golf Association’s August Ace of the Month Tournament after his qualifying score held up last weekend at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.

Manny Mangarero actually shot a lower score than the 2003 Suva South Pacific Games campaigner, but the July Ace was ineligible to win because association rules state that players could only win once in a calendar year.

Sablan scored a net 68 to top the club’s August qualifier held in conjunction with the 2008 Tournament of Champions last Aug. 2 at the Kagman venue.

Mangarero bettered that by a stroke after he carded a net 67 last Saturday at the Kagman venue’s east course. The 12-handicapper did this by shooting a gross 79 built around a 39 in the front and a 40 in the back.

June winner Jordan Kossam, meanwhile, equaled Sablan’s 68 with a front and back of 44-43 that allowed the 18-handicapper to finish with a gross of 87.

Tars Olopai, Louie Tilipao, and junior golfer Jay Choi also finished at either below or even par with 18-hole performances of 70, 71, and 72, respectively.

A total of 15 RGA members took part in the competition. The rest of the field, with their scores in parenthesis, are as follows: Adam Hardwicke (net 74), Tony Rogolifoi (74), Dwain Stephens (76), Joe Wabol (76), Jess Wabol (77), Bill Kaipat (77), Brett Nelson (79), Nick Sablan (78), Tom Tebuteb (85), and new member Fasalu Tigilau (101).

In the closest to the pin competition, Choi was without peer in hole No. 4, while Nick Sablan took home the prize in hole No. 15.
