Mobil prices drop
Gas prices at Mobil stations on Saipan dropped slightly Wednesday night after a decline in the global price of oil.
Mobil stations are now advertising regular gas for $4.97 per gallon for self-service and $5.10 for full service, an 8-cent reduction. Diesel prices also slid by 9 cents to $5.89. Premium gas prices fell to $5.12 per gallon for self service and $5.24 for full service, a 9-cent and 7-cent drop respectively.
For now, the price reduction is confined only to Mobil stations, yet Shell stations historically have followed Mobil’s price adjustments within a few days with corresponding changes.
The price decline comes as market observers worldwide are noting slight drops in the per barrel price of oil after it reached record highs of $147 last month. Crude oil prices slid $3.09 Wednesday to settle at $ 127.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Several experts attributed the drop to diminished consumption in the U.S. market—a sign high gas prices had taken a toll on consumers—and eased fears over Hurricane Dolly, which was poised to pass over refineries in the Gulf of Mexico but later steered away from the region.
Meanwhile, the CNMI’s gas prices are still far above the national average. According to AAA statistics, the national average for a gallon of regular gas on the mainland United States stood at $4.02, a 4-cent decline from last month’s average $4.06. The national average one year ago was $2.94. Alaska still has the highest prices on the mainland at $4.69 per gallon.
