The Saipan Chamber of Commerce will host a workshop on Friday to address the growing concerns among local business leaders about the pending federal takeover of regulations on foreign labor.

In a statement released last week, the Chamber said a prominent immigration lawyer, Ladd Baumann, is slated to speak on the likely consequences of the takeover in a workshop at the Pacific Island’s Club.

Bauman, who practices law on Guam, has represented a host of high profile clients such as Citibank, Verizon, Exxon Mobil and Japan Airlines, according to his résumé. Moreover, he served as an assistant law professor at the University of Guam and as a part-time law lecturer at Navy bases for the University of Maryland.

The lecture, the Chamber said, will deal with the statutory language of the recently signed federalization law and the potential implications of the federal immigration rules now being crafted. In addition, Baumann will give the business community an overview of the current immigration system in the United States, touching on issues like visa options. The workshop will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

This workshop will be held at Pacific Island Club’s Napu Room. It will include a short lunch in the club’s Magellan Dining Room. The cost of the workshop is $25 for Chamber members and $35 for non-members. Seating is limited and reservations, which will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, must be made by the close of business on Wednesday, July 23 by emailing Sisi Alvarez at coordinator@saipanchamber.com.
