A University of Guam student, Charlene Amado, recently ended her internship at the Marianas Visitors Authority, focusing on her majors, tourism and human resources management.

Amado spent three weeks with the marketing division of MVA, learning about the key markets for the CNMI. She was exposed to the work put into developing these markets, and witnessed all the work put into the CNMI’s tourism industry. Amado also spent two weeks with the personnel and administration division and learned as well as experienced the everyday work of the division. She gained hands-on experience with the responsibilities of the division.

Amado, a Kagman High School graduate, learned that the tourism industry is not as easy as what she had learned in class. She also learned that in human resources, managing people is not easy as one might think.

“Marketing a location is a lot more difficult than promoting a product and human resources is not as easy as it seems,” said Amado. “My overall experience was great! I really liked the working environment because it has a friendly yet professional atmosphere. If I was given an opportunity to work at MVA in the future, I would take it.”

MVA Personnel manager Polly Deleon Guerrero said that educating students about the CNMI tourism industry is a primary goal of the MVA and serves as one of the agency’s outreach programs.

“We are happy that MVA had the opportunity to work with Charlene. As an integral part of our outreach program we continue to encourage our youth to learn more about MVA and our visitors industry as a whole,” Deleon Guerrero said. (MVA)
