Retired Judge Juan T. Lizama has endorsed the governor’s choice for his replacement at the CNMI Superior Court.

Lizama in a letter to Senate President Pete P. Reyes has urged the Upper House to confirm attorney Perry Inos’ nomination to serve as associate judge of the Superior Court.

“I believe he is one of the strongest candidates to serve as an associate judge. Mr. Inos brings a welcome combination of demonstrated legal experience, mentoring skills, and judicious temperament. These are essential qualities for any successful judge,” said Lizama, who retired in May 2008 to run for congressional delegate this election.

Lizama said he makes the endorsement not only as Inos’ friend, but also a former judge “who had the pleasure of observing Mr. Inos’ fine legal abilities in court.”

He added that Inos’ teaching experience is a rare asset for the judicial position. “A judge not only must uphold and develop the law, but also must act in a secondary role as a teacher. A judge needs effective teaching skills to help foster attorney growth and to mentor the law clerks who will serve under him,” said Lizama.

Inos’ nomination to the bench is awaiting Senate confirmation. If confirmed, he will serve for six years.

Inos has been in private practice since 1997. He attended the University of New Mexico School of Law and received his law degree in 1994.
