The Emergency Management Office is now alerting the community to be prepared for the typhoon season.

According to EMO, tropical storms and typhoons can occur any time during the year in the Marianas region, but most frequently during the rainy season between August to December.

Acting EMO director Juan Takai Camacho told Saipan Tribune said their office as well as other government agencies are prepared for the typhoon season.

Camacho advised people to also be ready for this season.

To inform the public about typhoon precautionary measures, the EMO will soon be hosting a proclamation signing ceremony declaring September as Disaster Preparedness Month.

“Most activities will be happening by September where the Disaster Preparedness Month signing of proclamation will be held,” the acting director said.

He said EMO would start putting out brochures and banners of disaster preparedness and providing the public other educational materials.

EMO said the potential threats from typhoons come from very strong winds, flooding caused by heavy rains, hazardous surf conditions, and washouts of coastal areas caused by extreme wave action.

The last major typhoon to hit the CNMI was Supertyphoon Chaba, which made landfall on August 25, 2004. Damage was estimated at $18 million. Days later, President Bush also declared the CNMI a major disaster area.

Before this, Supertyphoon Pongsona and Typhoon Chata’an both ravaged the island of Rota in 2002.
