Advocates, Captain Morgan’s, Gil Fever win
Devil’s Advocates, Captain Morgan’s, and Gil Fever won their games in Week 4 of the 2008 Northern Mariana Islands Football Association Co-ed Soccer Summer League held at the CPA Airport Field.
Last July 8, Devil’s Advocates edged Sureshanks, 1-0, in a game that saw both teams miss key players.
There was not much offense in the game and Devil’s Advocates only managed to get the win when a Sureshank player mistakenly booted the soccer ball on their own net.
Rio Sawhill and Jesse Phonsutjit missed the game for Devil’s Advocates, while Sureshanks’ Brenda Schultz and team captain Steve Mckagan were in Guam.
The win leveled Devil’s Advocates’ win-loss record to 2-2, while Sureshanks went down to its second loss as against a win and a tie.
The following day, July 9, Chris “Rhino” Nelson found the back of the net twice in the first half to put Captain Morgan’s on top, 2-0, against Deaniacs.
Deaniacs fought back in the second half, with Madison Smith scoring the goal of the week off a beautiful pass from Jersh Angeles, but it wasn’t enough to force a tie or a win, as Captain Morgan’s took the match, 2-1.
The win allowed Captain Morgan’s to improve to 3-1, while Deaniacs remained in the cellar with its fourth loss in as many games.
On July 10, Gil Fever remained perfect for the 2008 season after beating GMF, 2-0.
Gil Fever drew first blood when Jeff Cloud scored before halftime. GMF’s Dan Westphal didn’t exactly help his team’s cause when he scored on another own goal in the second half to make it 2-0 in favor of Gil Fever.
The win gave Gil Fever a 4-0 record, while the loss gave GMF a 1-2-1 win-tie-loss card.
In the race to the Golden Boot award, Jack Thethaiguy of Gil Fever is running away from the competition with five goals to his credit. In the women’s category, Lindsay Sosovec leads three other women by one goal.
The Coed Summer League is a non-competitive league. While results and goals are tallied, the No.1 rule of this league is to have fun.
NMIFA Co-ed Soccer Summer League coordinator Angelo Villagomez said the league lasts for eight weeks, with games played on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. Each team will play one game per week.
Games will start at 5:15pm on game days and will consist of two 35-minute halves with five-minute halftimes.
