Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez has told the Department of Public Safety to monitor traffic during power outages.

Villagomez in a directive to DPS Commissioner Clyde Norita said DPS should plan for the outages and provide traffic officers at major intersections.

“An integral part of dealing with the outages is to provide safety to our drivers and their passengers,” he said. “The Department of Public Safety should not wait for an accident to occur before it consistently provides traffic assistance during power outages.”

Villagomez said that power outages will continue while the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. works on the engines at the various power plants on Saipan.

However, the power situation is seen to improve once CUC’s contractor, Aggreko International, starts bringing rental generators into Saipan. The generators will provide additional 15 megawatt to Saipan’s power supply.

Aggreko will ship the generators once CUC makes a partial payment of $1.5 million. The shipment will come from the company’s office in Singapore, and is expected to take 26 days to arrive. An additional 10 days is needed to install the generators and place them on Saipan’s power grid.

The $6-million contract is for one year and includes the generators, lube oil, personnel costs, and maintenance. The monthly rate is pegged at $504,000, for a total of $6 million a year. CUC will provide diesel to the company.
