Construction firm sues former lawmaker over house project
A construction company has sued former Rep. Janet Maratita for allegedly failing to pay $7,758 incurred for the renovation of her house in Dandan.
BMW Corp. and BMW Construction asked the Superior Court to order Maratita to pay damages plus pre-judgment interest and court costs.
Maratita didn’t return a message from Saipan Tribune seeking comment.
Attorney S. Joshua Berger stated in the complaint that on Feb. 20, 2006, Maratita entered into a contract with BMW Construction for a house renovation project in the amount of $7,575.
On March 13, 2006, Berger said, Maratita entered into a second contract with the company, this time for the construction of a retaining wall and outside pala-pala.
“As part of these two contracts, defendant has purchased some materials for the construction work, and these amounts have been credited to the account,” the lawyer said.
He said Maratita paid $4,575 toward the balance of the house renovation contract.
“Defendant still, however, owes a total of $7,758.20 on the remaining balance on both the contracts,” said Berger, adding that Maratita is in breach of the contract.
BMW Construction owner Willie S. Wagan told Saipan Tribune that he had agreed to let the former congresswoman pay even $100 to $200 monthly.
Maratita, whom Wagan considers a friend, stopped paying more than a year ago.
Maratita, of Precinct 1, failed in her comeback bid to get another House seat in the November 2007 election.
