Saipan Little Leaguers, PIC are week’s best
The Saipan Little League All-Star teams in the Junior, Senior, and Major divisions advanced to their respective regional tournaments after dominating their opponents from Tinian and Rota last week.
The Saipan Junior All-Stars were the first to book a ticket to the 2008 Asia-Pacific Junior League Tournament after an 11-0 shutout of Tinian Sunday at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
Saipan’s best 9-12-year-old ballplayers then advanced to the 2008 Asia-Pacific Major League Tournament in Hong Kong after beating Rota, 11-1, Friday at the Joaquin Ogo Sr. Baseball Field in Sinapalo.
The island’s Senior All-Stars, meanwhile, blasted Rota yesterday but complete results from the championship game was still not available as of press time.
In the 2008 Women’s Recreational Spring Football League, Pacific Islands Club’s Paradise In Cleats captain Brenda Schultz booted her team to the championship after scoring the marginal goal in overtime against Matt Smith’s Smithereens last June 7 at the CPA Airport Field.
After both teams finished the 80-minute game all tied up at 1-1, Shultz found the back of the net following a strong penalty kick in the five-minute mark of the first 15-minute overtime. The goal was Schultz’s second of the game.
Preparations for the 2008 Oceania Championships, meanwhile, is fast heating up and will be more so in the next couple of days, especially with the arrival Friday of Oceania Athletics Association executive secretary Yvonne Mullins and Tahiti representative Titaua Juventin.
More than 70 swimmers, parents, and supporters of Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan, meanwhile, crammed Pacific Islands Club’s Charley’s Cabaret during the club’s first anniversary party last June 7.
Krystal SaipanCell Hustlers, for its part, was feted last Sunday during the 2008 Winter/Spring Budweiser SBA Open 8-Ball League awards banquet also at Charley’s Cabaret.
Kiss My Pass also made waves last week after winning the pennant of the 2008 Miller Lite 4-Person Beach Volleyball League. It finished the regular season with a 13-1 win-loss record, its only setback came courtesy of runner-up Fatingali.
In bowling, Paul Pangelinan (Class A), Allan Hernandez (Class B), and Ed Echavez (Class C) topped their divisions in the first week of the 2008 Philippine Bowling Association Classified Tournament held last Sunday at the Saipan Bowling Center.
The past week also saw action continue in the PTI Inter-Government Business Basketball League and 3rd Annual Budweiser-Saipan Major League even as the Inaugural FMI Inter-Color Basketball League entered its playoff round Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
