Taga Warriors, Tasi Tours advance
Taga Warriors and Tasi Tours Giants advanced to the next round of their respective divisions as the playoffs of the Inaugural FMI Inter-Color Basketball League finally got going Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In the curtain raiser, Taga Warriors bucked a slow start to beat CTSI, 72-69, in the masters division. Tasi Tours, meanwhile, used its height advantage to the hilt in exacting a 99-90 loss to Shirley’s Coffee Shop/Blue House in the nightcap in the open division.
CTSI jumped the gun on Taga Warriors as Ariel Jinang pumped in 10 first quarter points to help his team take an 18-14 spread into the second.
Taga Warriors continued to struggle in the second quarter, as big men Ed Cosino, Ronald Delos Reyes, Jun Abedes, and Danny Bicera had trouble keeping up with CTSI’s two-point guard attack led by Adonis Macoto and Ferdie Tobias.
At the end of the first half, CTSI surprisingly held a 10-point lead, 45-35.
The taller and heftier Taga Warriors finally began to take its toll against the smaller CTSI crew in the third, as Abedes and Bicera combined to score 12 of the team’s 22 points to help Taga Warriors take the lead and enter the fourth and final quarter ahead by three points, 57-54.
Both teams matched each other point for point in the payoff period resulting in Taga Warriors taking the win and advancing to the next round of the 40-and-over age group.
In the second game, Tasi Tours’ own dynamic duo of Ehroll Peredo and Sonny Ranola got the better of their matchup against Shirley’s one-two punch of Elmer Esdrelon and Ryan Sanciangco to lead the Giants to victory and a berth in the second round of the open competition.
