WSR celebrate wins in sporting events
The William S. Reyes Kingfishers yesterday celebrated their athletes’ recent victories in several sporting events held over the weekend on Saipan.
The Kingfishers won the boys basketball title in last week’s Public School System Inter-scholastic Basketball Tournament at the Marianas High School Gymnasium, while their 8-and-under boys’ squad earned the most points to bag the division crown in the 4th Annual McDonald’s All-Schools Track and Field Championship held the same day at the Susupe Sports Complex.
Their girls’ 10-and-under team also settled for second place behind champion Kagman Elementary School.
The WSR Parents, Teachers, and Students Association held a party where they treated all members of the team to a Subway meal composed of a sandwich, fruit juice drink, baked cookies, and healthy chips.
WSR physical education instructor Brandon Concepcion, who coached the boys’ basketball team, said that is their way of teaching the kids to have a healthy lifestyle.
“Here at WSR we are implementing healthy ways in which kids learn how to eat and live healthy. We don’t allow them to drink soda or eat junk foods during their break. We are promoting healthy living by eating right and exercise.”
Mary Janes Limes, who together with Christine Cabrera helped coached the track and field teams, thanked and congratulated all athletes for giving the best in every game. “Thank you for the great job and effort you showed in every competition in making WSR proud. Thank you also for practicing good sportsmanship after every game.”
Limes also invited other WSR students to join any sport that they would be participating in for next year. “Join us in any sport or any inter-scholastic activity next year.”
PTSA adviser Luis Camacho said WSR students should always become model citizens as they graduate. “Remember where you came from when you go out to the community.”
WSR boys’ basketball co-captain Jake Ray and Ray Sanchez were grateful for the teamwork that they showed when they played against other elementary schools in last week’s basketball tournament.
Ray and Sanchez, who were transferees from the elementary schools of Koblerville and San Antonio and are now classmates in the 6th grade at WSR, said they had a weird feeling going up against their former teammates.
“We played with them last year now we are from different teams. Its weird but it’s part of the competition,” said Sanchez.
Ray said he would practice more this summer to improve his basketball skills. “I plan to join a summer youth league where I can play against players at my age.”
Other members of the team are R.J. Rudolph, R.J. Dela Cruz, Anson Ray, Jeffrey Lizama, David Yang, Stevan Roque, Elias Malite, Nathan Bautista, Michael Yap, Lujan Reyes, Karl Lacsilino, and Simon Reyes.
Boys’ 8-and-under coach Limes also made special mention of Christian Morales, who had a four-gold medal sweep in all events he competed in. Morales won the gold in the 100m sprint, 400m run, and helped their 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to a first place finish.
Other medalists in the 8-and-under division are Vincent Taman, Jovohni Santos, Christian Palacios, Jack Bibon, Alex Limes, Hedrick Ngiralmuut, Joseph Maratita, Jerome Lizama, Nathan Camacho, Philip Sablan, and Keitani Rudolph.
WSR’s 10-and-under girls’ squad, meanwhile, settled for second place behind Kagman where most of their medals coming from the relay and running events.
The members of the team are Pauline Cabrera, Denalyn Dela Cruz, Jo-Anne Liberato, Jericah Palacios, Evelyn Lizama, Tinon Rangamar, Scarla Renguul, Maria Valencia, Gina Rudolph, and Anna Canico.
