Tan remains Loyola Tennis champion
Lydia Tan continues to lord it over in the women’s Class A of the Loyola Tennis Tournament held Sunday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan courts.
Tan swept her games to remain as the class A champion for the third time, a title that she first won in the inaugural tournament last year. She bested Melanie Daly and Yuri Hatamata the previous two.
She first scored an easy win against Hatamata, 8-1, in round-robin play then survived Daly’s gallant stand in an 8-5 triumph.
Long rallies and a mixture of shots highlighted the Tan-Daly match where the former’s will to win and stamina withstood her opponent’s gutsy plays.
Tan now has three class titles. She first won the title scoring an 8-6 victory over Daly on May 6, 2007, and repeated again on Dec. 2, 2007, with another 8-6 win over Daly.
It was also Tan’s third straight finals win against Daly. Hatamata placed third.
In the class B, Sakiko Eda defeated three other players to win her first title. She placed third in both tournaments last year.
Vicki Izuka pushed Eda to the limit before bowing out in an 8-7 (7-5) tiebreak. She also defeated Mayling Colombo, 8-6.
Colombo placed third after an 8-5 win over Karen Sato.
Last week, Chris Park and Sakura Imaya won their second age group titles in the 13-and-under boys division and the girls’ 9-and-under class.
Park scored consecutive wins over Chris Cepeda, Jeron Año, and Grant Rhee in the elimination round to earn the first finals berth. He made it 2-0 against Rhee in the finals cruising to an 8-0 decision.
In the battle for third place, Año proved he still had some fuel left in his tank when he needed a tiebreak to complete an 8-7 (7-5) decision against Cepeda.
Imaya also coasted to an easy 6-0 win over Gio Song in the girls’ 9-and-under division.
In the boys’ 9-and-under division, Carl Dela Cruz won the title after a 6-2 win over Kevin Rhee. Dela Cruz placed fourth in the December tournament losing to Evzen Pabellon, 7-8 (5-7).
Jason Gamboa placed third after beating Alen Cepeda, 6-2, in the consolation match.
