The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has no room for people either using illegal drugs or just plain lazy, according to new CUC executive director Antonio Muna.

Muna said that CUC does a lot of things that require public service and the staff members need to be there to perform their very best.

“I think whether it is drug use or laziness or they can’t get out of bed or they can’t get to work on time, I think we don’t expect those folks to meet performance standards,” said Muna when asked by Saipan Tribune on his stance about drug use that was an issue a few years ago at CUC.

Muna emphasized that he comes from a background that has zero tolerance for drug use.

“Hopefully as we start to communicate, these people will realize that they need to be at their very best when they come to work in the morning,” he said.

The CUC chief said that if employees are not at their very best, then “I can’t help them.”

Muna earlier stated that CUC personnel would see performance from him and that he expects that from all of the staff.

“Performance. That’s the bottom line. We’ve got to perform,” Muna stressed.

On the austerity Friday issue, the executive director said it is difficult to implement that at CUC because the utility agency has a “24-7 job.”

“We need to do what we need to do. As that becomes necessary, I’ll be the first to take that position,” he added.
