HPO: This Place Matters
The Commonwealth will mark Historic Preservation Week on May 18-24, 2007, according to a proclamation signed by Gov. Benigno R. Fitial yesterday.
“This place matters” is the theme for this year’s CNMI Historic Preservation Week whereby the citizens are urged to recognize and celebrate the significance of their historic, archaeological, and cultural resources as a source of economic development, education and identity.
The governor is urging all residents to recognize the importance of historic preservation “and work toward a greater understanding of our archaeological history and culture.”
The proclamation reads that it is important to understand the role of history in one’s life and to appreciate the contributions made by individuals who preserve the heritage that shapes them as a people.
HPO Director Roy Sablan is asking schools throughout the island to call the office at 322-4446 to make arrangements for field trips and class presentations.
“Our office is open to any calls from any of the school on Saipan for field trips and class presentations,” Sablan said.
There are thousands of archaeological and historical sites, buildings and landscapes in the Northern Marianas. About 40 of these sites are included in the National Register of Historic Places.
